What to Pack for a Sahara Desert Expedition: Essential Desert Kit & Clothing
Tested packing advice for extreme desert temperature shifts: daytime UV protection, sub-zero dune nights, footwear choices, and fine-sand electronics care.

When planning an outdoor expedition to the Moroccan Sahara, travelers face a fundamental question: should you venture to Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, or push deeper into the isolated wilderness of Erg Chigaga south of M'Hamid El Ghizlane?
Both offer immense seas of wind-sculpted sand dunes (*ergs*), camel caravans, starlit night skies, and traditional Berber hospitality. Yet their geography, accessibility, and wilderness character could not be more distinct. Having guided expeditions across both regions for over a decade, here is the honest, field-tested comparison.
Erg Chebbi: Situated in eastern Morocco near the frontier oasis of Merzouga, Erg Chebbi is accessible via paved tarmac roads from Marrakech (approx. 9–10 hours) or Fes (approx. 7–8 hours). Paved access means you can drive directly to the edge of the dunes before switching to camels or 4WD vehicles. This makes Erg Chebbi the ideal choice for travelers with limited time (3-day round trips) or those seeking seamless logistical transfers.
Erg Chigaga: Located in the far southern Souss-Massa-Draâ region, Erg Chigaga is situated 60 kilometres beyond the end of the paved road at M'Hamid El Ghizlane. Reaching Chigaga requires 2 to 3 hours of true off-road overland navigation across dried riverbeds (*wadis*), rocky desert plains (*reg*), and the expansive dried salt pan of Lac Iriqui. A robust 4WD vehicle and experienced local driver are mandatory.
Erg Chebbi spans approximately 28 kilometres long and 5 kilometres wide. Its dunes are celebrated for their striking golden-orange hue, rising sharply from a flat gravel plain to heights of up to 150 metres. Because the dune field is relatively compact, you can gaze from the highest crest and see the palm groves of Merzouga on the horizon.
Erg Chigaga, by contrast, is a vast, untamed wilderness extending over 40 kilometres in length and 15 kilometres in width. Its dunes are lighter, pale-gold in color, and reach monumental heights of up to 300 metres (*Abidliya* dune). When standing atop Erg Chigaga, you look out across an unbroken ocean of sand in every direction with zero signs of permanent human habitation.
Because of its accessibility, Erg Chebbi features established luxury desert camps with private en-suite flush toilets, hot showers, and electricity. However, its proximity to towns means you will likely see other tour groups and hearing occasional quad bikes in the distance during peak seasons.
Erg Chigaga is about profound silence. Camp setups range from comfortable caïdale tent camps to wild, nomadic bivouacs under the stars. Nights at Chigaga offer true Bortle Class 1 dark skies: zero light pollution, allowing the galactic core of the Milky Way to cast visible shadows on the sand.
