Detailed Itinerary
Marrakech across Tizi n’Tichka Pass to Aït Benhaddou & Dades Valley
Depart Marrakech early, climbing through the High Atlas on the dramatic winding Tizi n’Tichka road (2,260 m). Stop at panoramic viewpoints and visit the ancient clay fortress of Aït Benhaddou, backdrop to Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Continue past Ouarzazate ("The Door of the Desert") and the Skoura palm oasis into the Valley of the Roses, arriving at your hotel nestled in the cliffs of the Dades Gorge for dinner.
Dades Gorge, Todra Canyon & Sunset Camel Trek into Erg Chebbi
Drive past the rocky "Monkey Fingers" geological formations toward Tinghir. Take a morning walk through the colossal 300-meter-tall limestone gap of the Todra Gorge. Continue southeast through Tinjdad and Erfoud, famous for fossil marbles, to Merzouga. Mount your dromedary camel at the dune fringe as the sun drops low, riding silently into the heart of Erg Chebbi’s 150-meter-high dunes. Arrive at our luxury tented camp for mint tea, an authentic multi-course tajine dinner, and drumming around the desert fire under millions of stars.
Sahara Dawn over the Dunes & Return to Marrakech via Draa Valley
Wake early to walk the crest of the dunes and watch the sunrise transform the sand from cool violet to burning amber. Enjoy a full camp breakfast before a morning camel ride or 4x4 return to Merzouga. Journey back westward across the black volcanic plateaus of Jebel Saghro and down the lush Draa Valley with its endless date palm groves. Cross the Atlas once more to reach Marrakech by evening.
Recommended Equipment
- •Loose, breathable cotton or linen clothing for daytime (long sleeves protect against sun and windblown sand)
- •Warm fleece jacket or wool sweater for night (desert temperatures drop rapidly to 5–10°C after sunset)
- •Traditional cheche (desert scarf/turban) for head and face protection during camel rides
- •Comfortable walking shoes or sandals with secure straps for walking on dunes
- •Power bank / camera batteries (cold desert nights drain batteries faster)
